The ecclesiastical parish of Bexhill St Barnabas was formed in 1891. The church was built to a design by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1890 on a site given by Earl De La Warr. The cost was met by the Revd Prebendary Charles Leopold Stanley Clarke, rector of Bexhill 1876-1889, and in 1909 his daughter, Evelyn Stanley Clarke, provided a further £6000 for the enlargement of the building.
