The Hellingly Hospital League of Friends was set up in approximately 1957 as a body of support for the hospital, raising funds, suggesting improvements, providing voluntary services such as visits to patients and generally encouraging public interest in the work of the hospital. It was originally formed as four separate units or divisions based at Hailsham, Uckfield, Eastbourne and Lewes. The central committee was set up in 1958; the first minute book dates from September 1958 but the earliest minutes are incomplete and do not include those for the first meeting. The divisions were still maintained and further divisions were added including those at Stonegate and Battle, both in Apr 1959, Bexhill in Jun 1962, Crowborough in Apr 1963, Hastings in Jun 1964, Tunbridge Wells in 1967, Seaford in 1970 and East Grinstead in 1973. Hellingly Hospital was closed in Jan 1994. The League of Friends was wound up and its assets transferred to the League of Friends of the Eastbourne Hospitals in October 1993
