Administrative / biographical background

Mr Roye England was the founder of Pendon Museum Trust Ltd, in Long Wittenham, Oxfordshire (Berkshire until 1974). After the Second World War he lived in Dorset whilst planning to make a detailed model of the village of Lillington. A series of black and white photographs, often carefully annoted, recorded his observations during various expeditions in 1946 and 1947. His friend Michael French often accompanied him during his trips. Although a model village for Lillington was never completed, the Vale of the White Horse as it was during the 1920s-1930s was modelled, and remains in Pendon Museum.

Throughout the catalogue Mr England's own references to his photographs are noted alongside the photographer's name.
