Statement of Capt AD Carter on the death of Lt AP Orde Ward "I have the honour to make the following report on the death of Lt A P Orde Ward who was killed yesterdayv afternoon on the High Dyke between Welby and Loudonthorpe by a low flying aeroplane. At 4.40pm, on the 11th instant Mr Ward and I were walking southwards along the High Dyke and had reached a point about 100 yards north of the road junction made by the Loudonthorpe Rd and the High Dyke when our attention was attracted by a low flying aeroplane coming up behind us. We turned to look at it. The plane was then about 100yards away and about 50 feet up. I turned to walk on, but realizing that it was very close I instinctively stooped. The next instant Mr Ward fell across me. I glanced up and saw the plane rising rapidly about 50 yards south. I then turned to speak to Mr Ward who I thought had stumbled across me in attempting to avoid the plane and found him lying in the road with a deep wound in his forehead. He had keen killed outright. After placing Mr Ward's body by the side of the road, I obtained an ambulance from Belton Park Hospital and had him taken to the mortuary. The County Police were informed by the hospital of Mr Ward's death. I have made a full statement of the accident to the Inspector of Police and have given him the name of Miss Harriet Longland of Welby who was within 25 yards of Mr Ward and me, when the accident occurred.";Other Notes: ORDE WARD, Lieutenant, A P, Lincolnshire Regiment attd. Machine Gun Corps (Inf). 11th November 1918. Age 33. X. 1555. Eastbourne (Ocklynge) Cemetery - Sussex, United Kingdom.;
