Description

United Kingdom: English Channel: Channel Islands. Dedicated 'To his Royal Highness Prince William Augustus Duke of Cumberland, Marquis of Berkhamstead, Earl of Kennington, Viscount Trematon, Baron of the Isle of Alderney...'. 'This Actual Survey of their Majesties Islands of Guernsey, Alderney and Serk [Sark] (part of the Ancient Dutchy of Normandy) describing all the Dangers, Rocks, Sands and Shoals on those Coasts (known to be too fatal to the British Commerce)'. Chart, scale: 4.9 inches to 6 miles containing 6000 feet; with enlarged inset: 'A Particular Plan of the Isle of Alderney with the Caskets and Other Rocks Surrounding it', scale: 8 inches to 3 miles containing 6000 feet and three views: 1) 'These 3 Lights are placed on ye [the] Westermost part of the Caskets...'; 2) 'A South View of the Caskets as they appear at half Ebb'; 3) 'A Representation of the use of the Instrument called the Marine Surveyor'. Survey and enlargement show coastline, hydrography, anchorages, jetties, wreck sites (Illustration of Dragon Man of War lost 1713 'which induced the Author (for the publick [public] good) to make this Survey'), settlements, buildings, fortifications (including Le Fort d'Essex and Castle Cornet), remarks and explanatory key. Includes decorative cartouche. Includes illustrations of ships. Colour manuscript. Watermark: crest [obscured by backing and damage]. North point with compass indicator. 'By HDS [Henry de Saumarez] 1727' author of the New Instrument Call'd [called] the Marine Surveyor (a navigation aid); assigned: 'Wm [William] Bligh RN [Royal Navy]'
