Arrangement

Note on box numbers and arrangement

The documents were contained in six uniform tin deed boxes numbered 4, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 14, and in two smaller tin boxes numbered 4 and 18. These box numbers have been retained, but the small boxes 4 and 18 have been numbered Box X4 and X18 respectively. A few obvious strays have been replaced. The documents to which the box number 1A has been assigned were received from Major Turnor by way of the Bedfordshire County Record Office together with two other deeds which have been added to Box X18.

A brief list of Major Turnor's documents, made by Miss Kathleen Major at Stoke Rochford in 1944 shows that the present arrangement in boxes is recent. This is also shown by some old labels on the boxes and by pencil notes of box numbers on some of the deeds. In 1944 the documents were contained in six boxes numbered 1, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 14. The contents of Box 10 seem to have been the same as at present, but the rest have been altered more or less.
