Collection of diaries and papers covering General Strickland's service career from 1899 when he was with the Egyptian Army in the Sudan until 1922 when the 6th Division which he was commanding in Ireland was withdrawn after Southern Ireland was granted Home Rule. The strength of the collection lies in the First World War diaries and in the papers relating to Strickland's Irish Command.

Born 3 August 1869 died 24 June 1951. Strickland was commissioned in the Norfolk Regiment in 1888. He saw service in Upper Burma (1888-89) and with the Egyptian Army (1889-1905) during which time he saw action in the Sudan. Then after a year in India he was posted to Nigeria where he served until 1914. He was then given command of the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment. He served in France during the First World War and was given command of the First Division in 1916. During his period of command the Division saw action in the front near Albert, the Somme, Nieuport, and was involved in the Second Battle of Passchendaele and in the German Spring Offensive and British Autumn Offensive. In 1919 he was placed in command of the Sixth Division in Ireland, a post he held until the withdrawal of the British troops in 1922. He then commanded the Second Division from 1923 to 1926 and was GOC of the British Troops in Egypt from 1927 until 1931. He retired from the army with the rank of General in 1931. The collection contains papers relating to his army career from 1899 to 1922.
