Administrative / biographical background

The castle and lordship of Chepstow, alias Strigoil, with the adjacent manor of Tidenham (Glos.), was inherited by the Bigods as coheirs of the Marshal earls of Pembroke. In 1453 John (VI) de Mowbray granted the office of steward of the lordship to his cousin William de Berkeley: above, BCM/D/3/5/2 [GC 4279].
