Administrative / biographical background

The society was registered as a Benevolent Society under the Friendly Societies Act on 30th August 1918 (also registered under the War Charities Act). The aim of the society was to equip, maintain, manage and finance Anglo-Chilean Hospitals, including a war hospital for wounded members of His Majesty's forces. The Anglo-Chilean Hospital was located at 6 Grosvenor Square, London. The society was run by a committee of management consisting of Augustine Edwards (Chairman), J Gregory Jones (Honorary Treasurer), C Silva Vildosola (Honorary Secretary), Sir Peter McClelland (Trustee), Kenneth Mathieson (Trustee), Albert J Bennett and Vincente Echeverria. There were a number of different types of membership of the society, Governors (those who donated £500 or more), Founders (those who donated at least £100 within three months of the registration of the society), Life Members (those who donated not less than £10, Subscribers (those who donated not less than £1 per year) and Honorary Members (donors resident in Chile). The society was short lived, lasting less than two years, with the final meeting taking place in March 1920.
