Description

Private Arthur Taylor came from Osmaston near Ashbourne. He enlisted in an Irish regiment, the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons, and was on active service with them in South Africa from December 1901. A keen observer, his diary gives a fascinating insight into the frustrations of combat against the Boers, military tactics, contacts with 'Kaffirs' and the scenery and terrain of the South African veldt.

The Boer War 1899-1902 was the result of constant friction between Britain, the colonial power in South Africa, and the Boers, descendants of Dutch and other European settlers, who had established independent republics in the Transvaal and Orange Free State.
