Lodge of Alfred in the University of Oxford, No. 455 sent a Petition to the Moderns or premier Grand Lodge on 21 November 1769, was granted its warrant on 2 December 1769 and was constituted at its first meeting on 13 December 1769. The petitioners included Hercules Durham esq, Rev Robert Markham DD, Rev James Wood MA, Rev John Napleton MA, Rev Giles Haddon MA and Rev John Willis MA. The lodge met at two different locations during its working life, namely the King's Head, Corn Market, Oxford from 1769 and the New Inn, Fish Street [now St. Aldate's Street], Oxford from 1771. The Lodge was renumbered on several occasions while working and met as No. 391 from 1770, No. 303 from 1780 and finally, No. 304 in 1781. The Lodge is said to have ceased working around 1783 and was erased permanently on 10 February 1790.
