Letter of Matthew Cowper, Secretary, Calpean Lodge, No. 465, Gibraltar to William White, Grand Secretary, Moderns' Grand Lodge re letter with a Masonic calendar and copy of Grand Lodge accounts mentioning subscription remittances from the Lodge received via Henry Cowper, a member of Lodge of Inhabitants, No. 159 [SN 524], the Garrison, Gibraltar. Now sends a bill of exchange of A Cadogan drawn on Ross and Ogilvie for twenty pounds Sterling for a contribution to the Charity Fund and membership subscription and initiation fees. Refers to John Sweetland Esq as acting Provincial Grand Master and requests a copy of the Masonic calendar and the printed Quarterly Communications of Grand Lodge.

Administrative / biographical background

Royal Lodge of Friendship was granted a warrant by the Moderns' or premier Grand Lodge on 15 December 1789 to meeet as No. 556, although a group was meeting at the Garrison in Gibraltar under a provincial warrant from 1788. In 1792 the Lodge was renumbered as No. 465. It met as No. 520 after the union between the Moderns' Grand Lodge and Antients' Grand Lodge to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1814. It was renumbered as No. 345 in 1832 before receiving its present number No. 278 in 1863. The early meeting place of the lodge in Gibraltar is unknown but by 1860 it met at Freemasons' Hall, Glyn's Buildings, Gibraltar. In 1789 the Lodge met as Calpean Lodge but was renamed as Lodge of Friendship in 1815. The Lodge is known now as Royal Lodge of Friendship. The Lodge met at the Gibraltar Masonic Institute, 47a Prince Edward's Road, Gibraltar after 1936.
