John Galbraith Gill was born in India in 1889, and qualified as a doctor at Edinburgh in 1912. In 1914 he was commissioned in the RAMC, serving in France and Italy during the First World War. As a Captain he commanded the 41st Combined Field Ambulance (2nd Indian Division) in the Afghanistan North West Frontier Campaign of 1919, becoming a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1937. In the inter-war period he held various appointments in India, Burma and the UK. During the Second World War Gill served in the UK, India, as a Director of Medical Services for Paiforce in Persia and Iraq 1941-44, and in North West Europe 1944. He retired in 1946 as a Colonel with the honorary rank of Major-General, and was employed with the Control Commission Germany during 1946-50. He died in 1981.
