Lieutenant General Sir James Outram was born on 29 January 1803. He went to India in 1819 as an ensign and later a lieutenant in the Indian army, and in 1843 was appointed to a command in the Mahratta country.
In 1847 he was transferred from Satara to Baroda, where he incurred the resentment of the Bombay government through his allegations and exposure of corruption. His name is also connected with the defence of Lucknow in 1854, and he later fought in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In July 1858 he was promoted to Lieutenant-General and received a baronetcy from Queen Victoria.
Sir James Outram retired in 1860 and died on 11 March 1863 in France.
