Administrative / biographical background

A Rural Sanitary Authority was formed in August 1872 for Westbourne Union under the Public Health Act of that year. In January 1895 it became Westbourne Rural District Council under the Local Government Act of 1894.

The R.D.C. was abolished in March 1933 under the West Sussex Review Order. Its area formed part of the new Chichester Rural District Council.

The R.D.C. consisted of the following parishes: Bosham, Chidham, Compton, West Dean, Funtington, East Marden, North Marden, Up Marden, Racton, Stoughton, West Thorney, and Westbourne.

There were no major changes in the boundaries of the District or the Parishes within it. Local Government Board Orders in 1880 amalgamated the detached parts of East Marden and Stoughton with Compton and the detached parts of Stoughton with East Marden. For full details of this see Boundary Changes in West Sussex (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).
