Description

Accounts, apprenticeship indentures and an agreement, re Bablake School 1656-1813 Charity accounts, applications for admission and apprenticeship indentures, re Baker's, Billing's and Crow's charities and Charity School 1783-1891; apprenticeship indentures, 1759-1835; accounts of Samuel Smith's Charity 1833-1868.

Arrangement

The records in this collection are part of the early records of Bablake School, the Modern records form Accession 489 and part of the records of Baker, Billings and Crow's Charity School. The minutes of the Charity 1812-1901 are Accession 4.

Immediate source of acquisition

This accession was presented by Mrs. Bates, the widow of Alderman J.I. Bates, July 1934.

Administrative / biographical background

A boy's hospital was added to Bablake College in 1560, after it's restoration to the Corporation, 21 boys and a nurse being maintained, fed and educated by Wheatley's Charity. A crown stipend was added to this charity to make up the difference and other charities subsequently added, viz Tallans, Overs, Sneads and Saunders. V.C.H. Warwickshire. Vol.II. p.329.

1. According to the 'Report of Commissioners concerning the Charities of Gentry 1834 p. 16-. The pupils stayed at school until reaching the age of 14 when they were bound out to different trades at premiums of £2 each and clothes to the value of £3.16s.6d, being bound in other cities than Coventry.
