Salt Duty
Application in writing by John Gill and William Rundle of Tavistock, Devon, merchants, Henry Williams, late master of sloop 'Loyalty' of Liverpool, and Henry George of St. Mary, Scilly Islands. H.W. stated that on 1 Oct. last he shipped at Garston Salt Works, Liverpool 25 tons of British salt, duty paid, to carry it to Morwelham Quay (in port of Plymouth) on account of J.G. and W.R. The vessel was detained at Carnarvon for fitting a new top mast, and on 1 Nov. last struck a ledge of rocks called Spanish Ledge off St. Mary's Island and sank, and all the salt was lost. H.G. stated that he saw H.W. land on the island on 1 Nov.: Collector of Excise to allow repayment of salt duty.
