Administrative / biographical background

The business was begun sometime before 1733, and had been purchased by Thomas White in 1816. His son Daniel (who had previously been a miller at Sidley and Ninfield) took over the business in 1852. Both Thomas and Daniel White held the post of stamp distributor, which lapsed on Daniel's death in 1889. Daniel's son Josiah John White joined the firm in 1863 and his son Harry in 1893. Harry White sold the business in 1946.
