Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst in command of a machine gun company. When the enemy had broken through the first two lines of defence and were attacking the strongpoint in which his headquarters were situated, he organised the defence with a total disregard of danger manning a gun himself when all the gun teams had been knocked out. When the point had been captured, he succeeded in getting back and, collecting two guns, continued his splendid defence against repeated attack until they also were knocked out. He was the last to retire, throwing bombs at the enemy to enable the few remaining men to get away. While doing so he was wounded. His magnificent courage was beyond praise.;
