R. V. Pitchforth was educated at Wakefield Art School (1912-13) and at Leeds School of Art (1913-15). He served with the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War and was permanently deafened. He then returned to Leeds School of Art (1918-22) and completed his education at the Royal College of Art (1922-26). His first solo exhibition was held in 1928 and, in the same year, he began to exhibit with the London Group and with the London Artists' Association. He taught at Camberwell School of Art from 1926 to 1930, then was a visiting lecturer at St. Martin's School of Art. During the Second World War Pitchforth was an Official War Artist. He lived in South Africa from 1945 to 1948. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and became a Royal Academician in 1953. There is further biographical information on Pitchforth in the exhibition catalogue `Roland Vivian Pitchforth, RA, 1895-1982', by Corinne Miller (Wakefield Art Gallery, 1984).
