The Ascension church was consecrated on 3 July 1869. A District was assigned to it from St. John the Evangelist, Broughton, and the parish of Manchester, by Order in Council, 4 June 1870, (London Gazette, 7 June 1870), and was called the District of Lower Broughton.
Part of the parish was transferred to St. Clement's Broughton, by Order in Council, 15 July 1881, (London Gazette, 29 July 1881).
