Description

Taken at Sleeford co. Lincs on the death of Sebastian Harvey Knight.

He died seized in fee of the manor of Howell and of Sketts manor in Howell, and divers manors in Iwarby, Awstrop als Austrop, Boughton als Backton and Asgardby, co Lincs, and in 40 messuages, 20 cottages, 10 tofts, 1 windmill, 4 dove-cotes 60 gardens, 2000 acres land, 600 acres meadow, 1600 acres pasture, 70 acres wood, 100 acres heath, 1000 acres marsh, 500 acres turbary in Howell, Iwarby, Austrop, Boughton and Asgarby, and the advowson of the church of Howell, all which he acquired from Edward Dymocke knight, and Mary his wife, John Pultney knight, John Danvers esq, John Copp esq and Thomas Wyles and George Browne.

He was also seized of the manor of Egmanton co Notts, and in 10 messuages, 6 cottages, 15 gardens, 600 acres land, 50 acres meadow, and 200 acres pasture, 160 acres wood and 100 acres heath in Egmanton and Tuxford.

20 July 11 James (1613) he leased to Samuel Tryon knight by the name of Samuel Tryon of London merchant, and William Courteen of London merchant, the property in cos. Lincs and Notts, to hold from the death of Sebastian for 40 years or life of Mary his wife. If she survived her husband and died before his daughter Mary attained the age of 21, the properties to be held from her death until Mary the daughter is of age.

Rent 12s p.a.

Sebastian and Mary his wife (Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life) were seized of 2 messuages and 1 cottage in Howell co Lincs (late Robert Johnson, William Bavyn and Nicholas Scuth) with appurtenances in Howell, Baughton, Asgarby and Ewerbye, which were lately acquired from Robert Johnson gentleman; and a messuage, windmill and lands in Egmanton co Notts which were lately acquired from Francis Thornell gentleman and Richard Thornell.

They were also seized (Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life) in the manors of Whitton, Greete alias Greote, and Bower, a moiety of the manor of Henley, the advowson of the the church of Greet, 20 messuages, 10 cottages, 3 mills, 4 dove-cotes, 30 orchards, 30 gardens, 600 acres land, 320 acres meadow, 1100 aces pasture, 200 acres wood, 200 acres heath, and 40s rent in Whitton, Netherwhitton, Wotton, Burford, Cayneham, Greete, Sifton, Weston, Nashe alias Ashe, Harthall, Nurton alias Overton, Bower, Stoke and Henley, co Salop

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, in the manor of Walton iuxta Stone and Wall co Staffs, 15 messuage 10 cottages, 1 mill, 2 dove-cotes, 10 orchards, 20 gardens, 300 acres land, 100 acres meadow, 300 acres pasture, 20 acres wood, 50 acres heath, 20s rent in Walton iuxta Stone, Stone Aston, Sandon, Burston alias Burweston, Swynerton, Darleston, Blakelowe, Tittensor alias Tittensore, Hilderston, Wollowescrofts alias Willocrofte, Boothall, Wall, Shenston, Ollershay, Pipehall and Lichfield co Staffs.

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, of the manor of Badsey co Worcs, and in a capital messuage called le Seyney Howse in Badsey, and in lands and tenements in Badsey, Aldington, Uffenham co Worcs

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, in the manor of Ludford, and property in Ludford in the parish of St Giles, which they lately acquired from William Foxe esq and John Harris esq

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, in the manor of Newby in le Stanes co Westmorland, and lands and tenements in Nubye in le Stanes, Parva Stricklande and Thernebye co Westmorland

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, in the manor of Winterborne Munckton co Wilts, 20 messuages, 10 cottages, 1 mill, 2 dove-cotes, 20 orchards, 30 gardens, 750 acres land, 200 acres meadow, 80 acres pasture, 50 acres wood, 200 acres heath, and 100s rent in Winterborne Munckton comWilts

They were also seized, Sebastian in fee and Mary for the term of her life, in a capital messuage and 8 other messuages in the parishes of St Dennis Backchurch and St Gabriel Fenchurche in the City of London (late in the tenures of Sebastian Harvey knight, John Grimston, Peter Chamberleyn, James Garrett, Thomas Peed, and John Ryeland) and in 1 messuage in the parish of St Benedict Grassechurche alias Gracechurche in the City of London (in tenure of William Edwards)

The manor of Howell, except Sketts manor, was held of Robert Carre bart. as of his lordship of Sleeford, by what service the jurors do not know.

Value £3.6.8 p.a.

Sketts manor was held by a rent of 3s called sheriff's aid (auxilium vicecomitis), but by what service the jurors do not know. value 40sp.a.

Half the manor of Iwarby and lands, parcel of the manor, in Iwarby and Awstropp, were held of the king in chief by knight service but by what part of a knight's fee the jurors do not know. Value 100s. The other half was the manor and lands in Ewarby and Awstropp were held of the king as of the Duchy of Lancaster for the 30th part of a fee, value p.a. 100s

Properties in Baughton were held of Robert Carre Bart, as of his Castle of Sleeford for the annual rent of £11.6.3 but by what other service the jurors do not know. Value p.a. 30s

The manor of Egmanton is of the annual value of 40s but by what other service held the jurors do not know.

The manor of Walton iuxta Stone and lands in Walton iuxta Stone, Stone Aston, Sandon, Burston, Swynerton, Darleston, Blakelowe, Tyttensore, Hilderston, Wollowescrofte and Boothall, are of the value of 40s p.a. but by what service held the jurors do not know

The manor of Wall, with lands in Wall, Shenston, Pipehill, Ollershay and Lichfield are held of the Cathedral Church of Lichfield, bu what rent and service the jurors do not know

The manor of Badsey and property in Badsey, Aldington and Uffenham is value 40s but by what service held the jurors do not know

The manor of Whitton is held of the king in chief by knight service, but by what part of a knight's fee the jurors do not know, value 40s p.a.. The lands and tenements in Netherwhitton, Wotton, Burforde, Cayneham, Sifton, Weston, Nashe, Harthall and Nurton are held of Thomas Cornewalle knight as of his Barony of Burford, but by what service the jurors do not know, value £20 p.a.

The manor of Greete is held of Thomas Cornewall knight as of his Barony of Burford, but by what service the jurors do not know, value 40s.

The manor of Bower and lands in Bower and Stoke are held of Edward Foxe knight by homage and service and suit of court of Cayneham twice a year, value 40s

Sebastian Harvey died 21 February 18 James I (1621), his wife Lady Mary outlived him, receiving the rents. Mary, only daughter and sole heir, was 16 years 2 months of age when Sebastian died. He held no other property in England, so far as the jurors know.
