Bargain and Sale for 9 years for £5876: John and Margaret, Duke and Duchess of Newcastle to John Rotherham, senr. of Dronfield, gent:-- all woods in Barlow Woods (452 ac.). (Except 32 Waivers of Oak and 4 Blackbarks on each acre or Eyreyes if the Blackbarks are insufficient (or Waivers if both Blackbarks and Eyreyes are unsufficient) at the choice of the Duke and Duchess; all timber in woods called Kingswood, Bennet Spring, Goodlads Spring and Millshrogg; and all wood and underwood in places where there is not above 3 ac. together (except the Dob Meadow Spring alias Janegate, Pannell Secke alias Sweetinsecke, and Coale Spring alias Little Brendwood)--: J.R. not to cut more than 60 ac. in any year; to supply hedgewood to the Duke's tenants in the manor of Barlow; and to deliver cordwood to the Duke for cording before 24 June and 29 September each year, receiving 6s. for every cord of 8'x4'x4'. Duke to have right to make charcoal out of such cordwood on the premises. If Duke refused delivery of such cordwood, J.R. might charcoal it himself. Duke and Duchess to pay a moiety of taxes on the premises. Disputes between the parties to be referred to Mr. Andrew Clayton or William Jessop of Broom Hall, co. York. esq.
