Title
Session at Canterbury, 8th January, 1599/1600
Date
1599/1600
Description

6 Evidence is given that Sylvester Glover, spinster, remaining at Hernhill, has had no certain dwelling there for a year since her departure from Tunstall where she was born. Therefore to be sent to Tunstall to be provided for or set on work there, according to statute of 39 Elizabeth.

7 Alexander Harris of Molash, yeoman, to be attached for the peace at suit of James Symonson.

8 John Gyll of Molash, carpenter, to serve out his covenant with Morgan Goodwyn, carpenter, his master.

9 Thomas Buckherst of Hawkhurst to be attached for good behaviour.

10 Order was made at sessions at Canterbury Castle on 24th July last [1599] that the parishioners of Barham should pay 8s. to Margery Griffyn, widow, towards her expenses in keeping Andrew Jones, born at Barham, and should take charge of him, clothe him and put him in service; which order they refuse to obey. Therefore Andrew Jones to be conveyed from Margery Griffyn to Barham and delivered to the churchwardens and overseers, and at the same time 8s. to be demanded of them, with the addition of 12d. for every week from 24th July last, which money is to be paid to Margery Griffyn, and in default thereof the churchwardens and overseers to be attached and to be bound in recognizances of £10 each to appear at next sessions at Canterbury to answer for their comtempt.

11 Parishioners of Preston to be discharged of keeping Ellyn Perryn, being with child, and she to remain at Challock where she now is, to be set to work as long as she is able, and if she become impotent to be relieved.

12 William Bridger of Staplehurst to be attached for contempt in refusing to perform a former order of the court.

13 Maister Mantle from the time of his first taxation for every year past to contribute 5s. to the relief of the poor of Horton, and 5s. each year until his estate be bettered.

14 Leonard Sweeting to have restitution against Richard Staple of Ash [next-Sandwich] of possession of two messuages and 2½ acres of land in Ash, whereof Richard is indicted for forcible entry.

15 Evidence is given that Vincent Pierson, an honest poor labouring man, having a wife and eight children, has dwelt in Bishopsbourne for 12 years, and has lately been put out of his dwelling house by the owner, and forced to provide for himself, which he might do in other places, but because he is "traded in worke" in that parish, and thinks he will not be so well set on work elsewhere, he has purchased a small parcel of land of William Denn, gentleman, as of his manor of Busted, and built a cottage thereon in Bishopsbourne, with consent of William Denn and Anthony Aucher, esq., chief lord thereof, and of the majority of the parishioners. Therefore the cottage to stand as habitation for the said Vincent, his wife and children, for the term of 100 years, if any of them shall so long live.

16 Evidence is given that the poor people under the keeping of Richard Sherwyn, keeper or governor of the spittle house or hospital at Key Street [in Borden] are visited with sickness. Therefore the yearly pension of £10 allowed to the said Richard at a former sessions at Canterbury, to be increased by five marks for the current year ending Christmas next, to be paid quarterly by the Treasurer of the 'East Partes' of the County.
