The function of town planning was merged with the Public Works Committee in 1919, and a Town Planning Sub-Committee was formed immediately, although very few of the early minutes survive. The sub-committee received from the City Surveyor a collection of reports covering Public Works issues, such as outstanding war damage (in 1955), land usage, temporary buildings, as well as private planning applications for extensions and garages, and similar works. The sub-committee then discussed, and usually accepted, the proposal on the report that the City Surveyor made. Between June 1960 and June 1965 the function of the now defunct Redevelopment Sub-Committee was taken on by the Town Planning Sub-Committee, which had been appointed to examine and report upon the detailed lay-out plans for the redevelopment of the central areas. The Redevelopment (later Redevelopment and Special Purpose) Sub-Committee was constituted in June 1965 (see BCC/1/AO/11), but met for the last time in April 1970, and it seems that its function was again taken on by the Town Planning Sub-Committee, as in May 1972 the sub-committee changed its name from the Town Planning Sub-Committee to the Town Planning and Redevelopment Sub-Committee to reflect its full function.
