This material arises from Hilary Wainwright's involvement with the Greater London Council during the 1980s and provides detail on the innovative activities of the Labour-controlled administration in developing alternative economic policies and building 'local socialism' which inspired many other local authorities. The GLC pioneered a notion of economic policy-making which involved relationships with local people and pressure groups. The deposit provides information on the activities of the Greater London Enterprise Board (GLEB), for example, investment in local firms, using the purchasing powers of the council to boost the local economy and improving employment and working conditions within the council. It includes transcripts of interviews and discussions with local organisations, reports, information on local campaigns (e.g. within the Docklands) and the work of the Popular Planning Unit, notes and correspondence about the development of 'The London Industrial Strategy'
