Dock and Harbour Engines (35 items).
NG: Single-acting engine, with 30¾ inch cylinder, 6 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam.
OI: 20 horse power independent crank engine, with [25½ inch cylinder, 3½ foot stroke], parallel motion, [cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod].Reverse plan and external elevation of the engine and boiler houses showing pumping and rotative engines, large lathe, shafts etc., Nov. 1833, marked "not adopted"; plans and section of "the building for the pumping engine etc. showing the proposed machinery for driving drilling machinery etc.", 27 Feb. 1834, marked "Copied from Mr. Rennie's tracing" and "not adopted".
Coloured reverse drawings, Apr. 1834, crossed out and marked "not adopted - see another set of drawings": plan of the pumping engine and 10 horse rotative engine and boilers; longitudinal section of the pumping engine house and well and transverse section of the boiler house; transverse sections of the engine houses and wells, plan of the wells and communicating drain; transverse section of the pumping engine house showing the cylinder platform, plan of the tunnel and covering stones; longitudinal section of the 10 horse engine house; longitudinal section of boiler and boiler house; plan and transverse section of the lathe shop showing the platform for the large lathe, tunnels for driving machinery etc.; longitudinal section of the workshop for the large lathe.
Reverse drawings, Jul. 1834: plan of the engine houses and boiler house, longitudinal section of the pumping engine house and well and plan of the wells and connecting drain (2 copies), longitudinal section of the 20 horse independent rotative engine house, transverse sections of the engine houses and wells and plan of the tunnel and covering stones, longitudinal and transverse sections of the boiler house and boilers, plan and transverse section of the platform and tunnel for the large lathe.
Drawings for the pumping engine: cylinder - coloured reverse drawing; 34 inch pump, working gear, main lever (beam) and plummer blocks, spring beams etc., parallel motion - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings; letter from Gilbert Hamilton to Richard Lewis, 1 Apr. 1834, with sketch of 34 inch pump working barrel - original and press copy; press copy sketch of spring beam. All the drawings except the last 3 items bear letter codes.
Plans of the docks: "Plan and longitudinal section of the North pump houses describing the well, chain pumps, part of docks, drains etc." by Thomas Roberts, Devonport, 25 Oct. 1833 (shows original horse pumps); plan of part of the docks, showing drains connected with the docks and horse engine houses, 13 Nov. 1833; 2 plans of the proposed new building for engines, lathes, drilling machinery etc., May 1834; letter from Thomas Roberts to James Brown dated Plymouth, 14 Jun. 1834, with section of the North Dock gates.
