Description

The collection consists of a photographic album, glass negatives and prints taken by members of the Moffat family of scenes in Ipswich and area. Where possible, the original numerical sequence of negatives has been followed.

Earlier negatives were taken by John Moffat (1850-1932), and later ones by his sons, Archibald Hunter Wallace Moffat (Arch- 1884-1968) and Alexander Alfred Moffat (Alec 1879-1974).

The family lived at 108 Rectory Road, Ipswich. Alec Moffat became assistant Town Clerk under William Bantoft, and later (1926-1946) Town Clerk. Arch Moffat was a keen member of the St John's Ambulance, Gippeswyk Brigade and the Ipswich Swimming Club.

Some ¼ plate glass negatives have notes added by Alec Moffat, detailing place, time, exposure period, printing paper used and other details. The negatives appear to have been taken using 'Instantograph' and 'Merveilleux' cameras.
