Description

In the compulsory commutation of tithe (6 & 7 Will. IV c.71; 1836), J. B. Freeland (deputy diocesan registrar, 1841-2) acted for the bishop, dean and chapter, local incumbents and tithe owners, and these are his papers. They include letters, newspapers, accounts, memoranda, legal opinions, tithe accounts and draft apportionments, notices and minutes of meetings of tithe owners, copies of documents--mainly terriers, abstracts and copies of leases and acts of parliament, powers of attorney and draft bills.
