Description (What the record is about)
-
See also D4842: Family Papers - Heathcote of Longton Hall held at Stoke on Trent City Archives The Heathcote family papers from Knight and Sons in this collection were originally held at Hanley Museum. The material relating to the family's Apedale estates was transfered to Newcastle Borough Museum and Art Gallery and the rest of the collection, largely realting to the Longton Estates remained at Hanley and is now at Stoke on Trent City Archives. The Newcastle Museum deeds were then transferred to Staffordshire Record Office in the 1980s and added to D4452. At some point between arriving at Hanley Museum and the transfer to Staffordshire Record Office the original bundles were broken up and original order lost. While some deeds obviously relate to the same property it has not been possible to recreate the original deed bundles. The deeds have therefore been arranged by place and in chronological order. The original bundle descriptions from Hanley Museum are available for consultation at Staffordshire Record Office on request.

Immediate Source of Acquisition Newcastle under Lyme Museum. These deeds had previously been held with Heathcote family papers at Hanley Library now D788 (Stoke on Trent City Archives). They were identified as originating from Knight and Sons and transferred to Newcatle under Lyme Museum in January 1959. The records were transferred in bundles but thereafter original order was lost and the bundles broken up. The original bundle list is retained in the deposit file for D4452. The deeds have been arranged by area in chronological order since it has not been possible to fully recreate the original bundles.
