Papers relating to travels in Ethiopia.
SSC/20/1/1 - Note on the Anuak country (S.W. Abyssinia), compiled from information supplied by Mr J.M. Clayton, late 18th Hussars, who spent three weeks in the district, during January 1911. 4 ms. pages over 4 leaves, accompanied by printed compliments slip of the Assistant Director of Intelligence, Khartoum, ms. date "30/3/[1]1911".
SSC/20/1/2 - Route report on a circular tour in the Anuak country.
SSC/20/1/3 - Notes on route from Dire Daoua to Addis Ababa AND: Notes on route from Addis to Gore (These notes are not in Clayton's hand, though said to be written from information supplied by him. Some pages are in French).
SSC/20/1/4 - Sketch map of the Aronsie country AND: Sketch map of route to Lake Hora Abgiata.
SSC/20/2/1 - Disbound pages, no cover, from a diary 1910-11, in hand of J.M. Clayton, with notes on tours following the routes in SSC/20/1 and of a shooting trip to Lake Hora Abgiata. [First leaf = 'Contents', listing 15 diary sections. Textblock lacks pages 1-6, i.e. Sections 1-3, 'France', and Section 4, 'On board the Djemnah'. Also lacks: pp.19-26 (most of Section 8, 'Diré Daoua'), pp.71-78, pp.89-92, pp.95-96 (portions of Section 10, 'Addis Ababa'), pp.123-126 (Section 13, 'Trek from Goré to Anuack Country...') and pp.161-168 (portion of Section 14, 'River journey from Gambella to Tanfikia & Khartoum'). Only first page of Section 15, 'From Khartoum back to the end of June', i.e. p.176, is retained. An additional 13pp., over 7 physical leaves, sit at rear of text block; comprising unpaginated lists of those individuals known to Clayton, or those met during his travels].
SSC/20/2/2 - Ms. laissez passer permit, in Amharic, with inked official rubber stamp; pencilled note below stamp states "Mr R. Ghaleb / Addis Ababa to Dire Daoua". Pencilled abbreviated note to rear: “a.d. to D.D.”. ["Mr. Ghaleb" is first mentioned in the initial diary entry - dated January 21st Friday - of SSC/20/2/1. Clayton describes him thus at the rear of his diary: "Mr Ghaleb is the Vice-Consul for Russia. I stayed with him all the time I was in Djibouti"].
SSC/20/3 - Photocopies of two ts. letters: Mrs O.C. Clayton (widow of J.M. Clayton) to RGS Director, 9/2/1976, re donation of husband's ms. sketch maps, notes/diary pages and photographs/negatives* AND: Director to Mrs Clayton, 17/2/1976, accepting donation [Originals in Director's correspondence]. * Images deposited in Picture Library collection.
