Description

A collection of nine albums, recording Stein's fourth Iranian expedition. The journey is described in detail in his Old Routes of Western Iran (London: 1940), where many of these photographs are reproduced. A.93 L.I Prints 1–40 Grey cloth covered album measuring 237 x 170 mm, containing 40 prints in aperture mounts measuring 75 x 100 mm. The album covers the period 1 June to 29 November 1935. Prints 1–19 are views of Stein's camp at Mohand Marg in Kashmir, and of Srinagar. From print 20 onwards the album starts the documentation of Stein's tour of Iran, with photographs from the following locations: Ardakan, Mullah Susan, Pul-i-murd, Qal'a-safid, Qalat, Shiraz, Tal-i-gird, Rang-i-gerrau, Tang-i-khas. A.94 L.II Prints 41–85 Grey cloth covered album measuring 237 x 170 mm, containing 45 prints in aperture mounts measuring 75 x 100 mm. The album covers the period 29 November to 26 December 1935, with photographs from the following locations: Arrajan, Basht, Behbehan, Chahar-deh, Chahar-taq, Deh-i-nau, Khairabad, Kotal-i-sangar, Kurdistan, Namo, Pul-i-Brin, Qal'a-safid, seh-talu, Shaikh Khwaja, Tal-i-gar, Tang-i-Maliun, Tul-i-Surneh. A.95 L.III Prints 86–131 Grey cloth covered album measuring 237 x 170 mm, containing 46 prints in aperture mounts measuring 99x74mm. The album covers the period 28 December 1935 to 15 January 1936, with photographs from the following locations: Arrajan, Aulish, Baba Ahmad, Den-dasht, Gach-darwazeh, Gil-i-surkh Pass, Idanak, Khashab-shirin, Lindeh, Narakun, Qal'a-i-sir, Tang-i-Sarwak, Zainab. A.96 L.IV Prints 132–178 Brown cloth covered album measuring 237 x 168 mm, containing 47 prints in aperture mounts measuring 75 x 100 mm. The album covers the period 15 January to 17 February 1936, with photographs from the following locations: Delli, Dizful, Gach-darwazeh, Hung-Naurozi, Karun Valley, Malamir, Manjanik, Masjid-i-Sulaiman, Qal'a-i-til, Qul-fara, Shami, Shikaft-i-Salman, Tashekar. A.97 L.V Prints 179–227 Grey cloth covered album measuring 237 x 170 mm, containing 49 prints in aperture mounts measuring 99x74mm. The album covers the period 17 February to 30 March 1936, with photographs taken at the following locations: Ambar-kohneh, Baba Khariz, Bagh-i-limu, Chigha-bardina, Chigha-sabz (Rumishkan), Chigha-sabz (Saimareh), Chul Pass, Dar-i-shahr, Dizful, Gaumeshi, Kozagaran, Pul-i-Dukhtar, Pul-i-ab-burdeh, Pul-i-tang, Qal'a-i-Bahram Chobin, Qal'a-i-Shakar, Qal'a-safid, Rudbar, Saraw-kalan Valley, Shahr-i-Chin-i-Zal, Surakat, Susa, Taikhan, Yarabad. A.98 L.VI Prints 228–276 Grey cloth covered album measuring 237 x 170 mm, containing 49 prints in aperture mounts 99x74mm. The album covers the period 30 March to 12 May 1936, with photographs from the following locations: Alishtar, Baramo, Chigha-pahan, Girairan, Hulainan, Kazabad, Khush-mahur Valley, Koh-i-dasht, Mir-siwan, Murakun, Pusht-i-Badawar, Qal'a-Alishtar, Rud-i-Kashgan, Saraw-kalan, Sarneh, Sefaleh, Shire-chigha, Shuturmil Pass, Sumaq, Sumaq Valley, Tang-i-Gau-shumar, Tang-i-Guraz, Zali. A.99 L.VII Prints 277–326 Brown cloth covered album measuring 228 x 150 mm, containing 50 prints in aperture mounts measuring 99x73mm. The album covers the period 12 May to 31 July 1936, with photographs from the following locations: Burhan, Chahwali, Diwan-darra, Girairan, Harsin, Kafanu, Karafto, Kermanshah, Maidan Pass, Mauyilbak, Safalan, Sahib, Sanandaj, Saqqez, Sarkashti, Sera, Sinjawi, Telyab. A.100 L.VIII Prints 327–372 Grey cloth covered album measuring 228 x 150 mm, containing 46 prints in aperture mounts measuring 75 x 100 mm. The album covers the period 31 July to 26 September 1936, with photographs from the following locations: Dinkha, Fakhrakah, Gilispian, Gird-i-Hasan Ali, Gurnabad, Hasanlu, Kela, Kile-sipian, Kitkan, Lagbin, Muhammad-shah, Naghadeh, Paswah, Qal'a-Jukh, Sakse-tappeh, Shekhan, Singhan. A.101 L.IX Prints 373–420 Blue-green cloth covered album measuring 228 x 150 mm, containing 48 prints in aperture mounts measuring 75 x 100 mm. The album covers the last stage of the Iranian journey, from 27 September to 8 December 1936. Prints 404–420 were taken in England in 1937. The original negatives for this series are also held at Neg 392/39. These are divided into two series: 'L' series glass negatives and 'L.0' series, nitrate film negatives.
