Description (What the record is about)
-
John Oldaker, the donor's father, was born at Brighton in 1858, the son of Isaac Oldaker (1812-1912) and his wife Mary Ann. Isaac, who was born at Rocester in Staffordshire, saw service in the army and became stationmaster at Falmer (see AMS5785/2) in 1861
John Oldaker qualified at Winchester Training College and taught in the Lewes area, including a short period as an instructor at Lewes Prison; he also attended the Lewes School of Art. In July 1881 he was appointed headmaster of the Boys' School, Newick; he retired in 1923 and remained at Newick until moving to Carshalton in 1932. His interest in cricket both locally in Newick and throughout the county is reflected in these records. Further details on the family are given in AMS5785/1
