Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The Council was established in 1931 to give help to rural communities and its work was considerable and diverse in the counties of both East and West Sussex. It gave assistance with child care, tuberculosis prevention and care, old people's welfare, mounted conferences and drama festivals, organized grants for village halls, gave advice on rural industries, set up citizens' advice bureaux and interested itself in planning and preservation. It still actively performs many of these functions and such bodies as the Sussex Association of Parish councils, the Sussex County Playing Fields Association and the Sussex Federation of Amenity Societies continue to be run from the Council's offices in Lewes
