Administrative / biographical background

Hey Chapel was built in 1742 and consecrated on 26 June 1744. It was originally a chapelry of the ancient parish of Ashton. A district was assigned to the church in 1860, by Order in Council 26 October, (London Gazette, 30 October), from the parishes of Ashton-under-Lyne and St. Anne, Lydate.

A note in the first separate burial register states : 'This Chapelry is situated in the confines of the three parishes of Ashton-under-Lyne, Oldham and Saddleworth and the seatholders in each have the privilege of interment'.
