Description (What the record is about)
-
Contains bonds and acts made on the appointment of surrogates, the church officers who stood in office for another, often as deputies to grant licences or hold courts.
The documents are printed forms which record the name of the surrogate which is included in this catalogue, and details relating to the appointment.
For example, on 24 June 1837 Ian Hugh White Thomson, Rector of the parish of St Martin with St Paul, Canterbury, was appointed surrogate of Francis Henry Lancelot Errington the Commissary General of the City and Diocese of Canterbury. This gave him the right to grant marriage licenses in his parish [DCb/J/S/18].
