Title

Barnston of Churton Collection

Date

13c-1840

Description

The records include a group relating to enclosure awards made principally by James Boydell, sen. and jun. and Josiah Boydell which are not obviously connected with the estate, though Roger H. Barnston (1802-1849) married as his second wife Emma Frances, daughter of James Boydell of Rossett. A Boydell was a past member of the present firm of solicitors, Gamon & Co., which acted at one time for the Barnston estate. The enclosure papers may therefore have been moved with the estate records by mistake at some time.

Administrative / biographical background

The earliest possessions of the Barnstons were in the Churton-Farndon area. Marriages to the heiresses of the Trafford, Gregg and Hurleston families brought to the family estates and lands in Bridge Trafford and Wimbolds Trafford, Hapsford, Elton and Chester. The marriages of the Rev. Roger Barnston (d.1782), prebendary of Chester, to Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of William Marsh of Eccleston co.Lanc., and of his brother Robert to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Whitmore Acton of Aldenham, Shropshire, brought interests in Lancashire and Shropshire estates to the family. Roger Barnston, son of Robert Barnston as executor of the will of Thomas Crachley Wynne (d.1778) acquired an interest in the Bagillt estate of the Pennant family in Flintshire with its lead smelting works.
