Born 1/4/94 at 21, Thornton Ave, Streatham Hill, SW. Son of Alfred George Dore of Thaxted, Devonshire Avenue, Sutton, Surrey. Originally enlisted on 25/9/14 in the Inns of Court OTC as No 1307, address as previous, age 20 years 5 months, height 6', weight 152lbs, physical development good. Discharged to commission 17/12/14 to 11 Y&L. His commission application dated 23/11/14 states that he was unmarried, address as previous, address for correspondence Inns of Court OTC. Educated at Dover College where he was in the OTC for 4 years. He requested any unit within 30 miles of London. A Casualty form for him with 101 Coy MGC states that he embarked Southampton 25/4/16 for Le Havre. He was buried at a point about 1,000 yds SE of La Boisselle. In December 1916 his father was 50, his mother Edith, was 48, his brother Donald Henry Dore (cadet RHA at Ordnance Rd, St John's Wood) was 18. His father was Managing Director of the firm Hancocks & Co (jewellers) of 25 Sackville St, corner of Vigo St, London who were the sole makers of the VC since it was instituted. The firm was run by H Hancock Dore and Alfred G Dore (his father). There is a note on file from a Col MD Graham dated 6/9/16 'The Managing Director of Messrs Hancocks & Co, jewellers of 25 Sackville St West, Mr A Dore has asked me enquire if there is any likelihood of the early settlement of his late son's estate, 2nd Lt AC Dore 11 Y&L and MGC. Mr Dore is the manufacturer of all Victoria Crosses since the institution of the decoration and he is very obliging to us in supplying crosses, very often at a few hours notice'. Listed as Y&L Regt transferred to MGC. Kia 1/7/16. To France 26/4/16. His medals were sent to his father Mr AG Dore of Devonshire Ave, Sutton, Surrey. (MiC)
