Description (What the record is about)

The drawing of Rothamsted Manor House has in the past been known to have existed only because of the reproductions of it in The Victoria County History of Hertfordshire and in D H Boalch's The Manor of Rothamsted and its Inhabitants, Harpenden, 1978. Now that it has been re-discovered the relationship of the two reproductions is clearer: Boalch's drawing is a hand-drawn copy of that in the VCH, while the latter is also copied by hand presumably from the original. It is obviously from a modern copy that the VCH illustration has been reproduced; the differences between it and the original drawing suggest the VCH engraver had not seen the original
