Documents created under the Finance (1909-10) Act 1910

Four series of documents were created for or by the Board of Inland Revenue valuation offices as a result of the provisions of the Finance (1909-10) Act 1910 concerning duties on land values

The valuation precis, also known as domesday books, were prepared by the inspector of taxes. They contain entries for each hereditament in England and Wales, providing basic information relative to the valuation of the property including the valuation assessment number, map reference, owner, occupier, situation, description and extent

The field books, the next series in order of compilation, were prepared by the valuation offices and contain all the information found in domesday books with additional detailed descriptions of the premises. [see IR/58 at PRO]

The forms 37 - land contain information extracted from domesday books

The terrier maps are 25" : 1 mile ordnance survey sheets of the 1910 edition and have every hereditament number plotted on them

The field books have been selected by the Public Record Office for permanent preservation and are available at Kew (IR/58) and the terrier maps are soon to join them. The domesday books and forms 37 - land have been offered to local repositories as an alternative to destruction; some duplicate terrier maps, presented in 1968, have also been listed here

It has been decided with the exception of forms relating to Southease and Rodmeli (for which domesday books have not survived) not to accept the forms 37 - land which have been destroyed

The present list includes the domesday books (IRV/1), terrier maps (IRV/2) and other maps showing miscellaneous later alterations (IRV/3). No distinction has been made between domesday books emanating from offices at Brighton, Hove and Tunbridge Wells, which had already been transferred to the PRO's Hayes repository and those from the Eastbourne office which had been retained, Domesday books originally from the Hove office relating to the modern administrative county of West Sussex have been transferred to the West Sussex Record Office, while those relating to Lower Pevensey Rape, administered from Tunbridge Wells, have been transferred from Kent Archives Office
