Description

Collection compiled by Oswald Deacon Hopps, electrical and mechanical engineer in India, comprising:. Photo 1363/1. Album of views, principally of the North-West Frontier and Kashmir, a mixture of amateur family snapshots and professional work (some of which can be attributed to the firm of Randolph Bezzant Holmes). Photo 1363/2. Family snapshot album, including many views of Kashmir. Photo 1363/3. Two loose prints: a group of the 32nd Sikh Regiment, and a portrait (by the Holmes studio, Peshawar), of an unidentified nursing sister. Biographical note: Oswald Deacon Hopps (1888-1932) was born in India and returned in 1913 to work as an electrical engineer and manager in the Lahore branch of the firm of James Lukes & Sons. He married Bertha Haynes in Calcutta in February 1917 and his son Phillip was born in 1918 and his daughter Hildegarde in 1919. In May 1917 he left Lukes to join the army and from 1920-24 served as garrison engineer at Bannu. The family returned to England in 1924.

Immediate source of acquisition
Given by Ros Mulholland, daughter of Phillip Hopps, 25 January 2017. The collection was for many years in the possession of Hildegarde Modral (daughter of Oswald Deacon Hopps), until her death in 2016, when it passed into the possession of her niece, the donor.
