Administrative / biographical background

There were three fair courts in Bristol and they were courts of piepowder. One was created by a charter of Henry III in 1255 and one by Edward IV's charter of 1461. For records of these courts see BCC/J/Tol, the records of the Tolzey Court

The third fair court was granted by William of Gloucester to the Prior of St James, which fair was vested in Sir George Winter and 2 aldermen at the dissolution of the priory. It was held alternately for the Corporation and for the successors of Henry Brayne.

The entries in these volumes are usually headed 'The Court of St James Bristol in the porch there', and so clearly refer to the St James Piepowder Court and not that held in Old Market.
