Administrative / biographical background

Ramsgate was a municipal borough incorporated under the Municipal Corporations Act of 1884. Its existence as a borough ended in 1974 when it was absorbed into the newly-formed Thanet District Council.

Ramsgate was part of the ancient parish of St. Lawrence until 1790 when a chapelry was created to serve it; a separate parish of Ramsgate, St. George was created in 1827. Anciently a liberty known as the ville of Ramsgate, Ramsgate was formally acknowledged as a limb of Sandwich within the Cinque Ports Confederation in 1483.

Ramsgate Borough comprised the following parishes:

Broadstairs (part) 1935-1974

(inherited from Broadstairs Urban District Council)

Garlinge (part) 1935-1974

(inherited from Thanet Rural District Council)

Ramsgate 1884-1974

(part transferred to Broadstairs Urban District Council in 1935)

St. Lawrence (part) 1884-1894

St. Lawrence Extra 1935-1974 (inherited from Thanet Rural District Council)

St. Lawrence Intra 1894-1922

St. Peter's (part) 1935-1974

(inherited from Broadstairs Urban District Council)
