TOWN PLANS OF CREWKERNE AND FROME AND DEEDS ETC. CONCERNING THE JENKYNS FAMILY

Description

This small collection [DD\SU/3 - 22] relates to the Jenkyns family and to properties held by them chiefly in Lottisham, Ditcheat, Baltonsborough, and West Bradley. [Lottisham was formerly a detached area of Ditcheat parish and became part of West Bradley parish in 1879.]

John Jenkyns (d.1824), for 40 years vicar of Evercreech, was father of two remarkable sons: the eccentric Richard Jenkyns (1782-1854) was Master of Balliol College, Oxford, 1819-54, Vice Chancellor of the University, 1824-8, and Dean of Wells, 1845-54; his brother Henry Jenkyns senior (d.1878) was professor of Greek at Durham University, married Harriet, daughter of the Rt. Hon. Henry Hobhouse of Hadspen, and was father in his turn of Sir Henry Jenkyns (1838-99) of Botley Hill, Hants., Parliamentary Counsel to the Treasury.

By 1838 Richard Jenkyns held some 135 acres in Ditcheat,(see tithe map, D\D\Rt), and this area was increased by subsequent purchases. In no case do the purchase deeds survive in the collection, though evidence of relevant transactions can be found in various deed schedules. Such deeds as the collection does contain are not in general identifiable with existing properties, though it is likely that most relate to parts of the Jenkyns estate. The collection also contains papers relating to estate administration, notably material concerning the building of Lottisham church and vicarage (DD\SU/16), a small number of personal papers, and a fine map of Lottisham, 1795 (DD\SU/20). Apart from some minor resorting, the original bundling of the collection has been largely preserved.
