Before borough council members, justices of the peace and officers could act, it was necessary for them to fulfill a number of qualifications, including the swearing of oaths of allegiance and supremacy. Records of a similar nature are also to be found amongst the borough quarter sessions. Oath formulary book and statements of practice for borough officers and justices, 1530s; oaths etc of office etc for council members 1682-1689, 1829-1936 and for justices 1836 and 1868-1972; deeds of appointment and resignation 1694-1834; register of mayors [1493]-1947; register of council members 1954-1974
