Salt Duty

William Noel, master, and James Harding, mariner, of the sloop 'William' of Penzance stated on oath that on 1 June last they shipped at Liverpool 2,401 bushels 40lbs of British fishery salt to carry to Penzance on account of Thomas Reed, fish curer. They sailed from Liverpool on 4 June and on 7 and 17 June, they ran into storms, took in water, and lost 213 bushels 40lbs of salt: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.

Roger Thomson, master, and William Maddox, mate, of the barque 'Stag' of St. Ives stated on oath that on 24 and 25 May last they shipped at Liverpool 4,017 bushels 48lbs of British fishery salt to carry to Newlyn, in port of Penzance on account of Richard Cunnack and John Connack [sic], fish curers. They sailed from Liverpool on 4 June last. In course of voyage the vessel sprang a leak and 74 bushels, 48lbs of salt was lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.

John Quicke, master, and Paul Quicke, mate of the sloop 'Industry' of St. Ives stated on oath that on 31 May last they shipped at Liverpool 2,983 bushels 34lbs. of fishery salt to carry it to Falmouth on account of John Hamilton, fish curer. On 7 June they ran into a storm, the vessel took in water and 140 bushels 49lbs of salt was lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.

William Doble, master, and William Bryant, mate, of the sloop 'Charles' of St. Ives, stated on oath that on 19 May last they shipped at Liverpool 2,477 bushels of British fishery salt to carry to Portreath in port of St. Ives on account of Henry Bath, fish curer. On 4 June they sailed from Liverpool and on 7 June ran into storms and vessel sprang a leak, and again on 16 June when vessel took in more water. 117 bushels of salt were lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.

William Phillipps and Samuel Polmear, both of Lanivet, labs. indicted for taking 5 gallons of cider, a quart of Geneva [gin] and a quart of metheglin [mead], property of Thomas Thomas: S.P. acquitted. W.P. received three months' hard labour in bridewell.
