Administrative / biographical background

The original brewery business of Cobbold and Co. was established in 1723, and in 1924 Cobbold and Co. Ltd., was incorporated to take over both Cobbold and Co. and Cobbold and Son. The present day business is run by the Tollemache and Cobbold Breweries - the Tollemache business originated in 1888, incorporated in 1896 as Tollemache Breweries Ltd., and the two firms merged in 1957. The Cliff Brewery and Holy Wells, the seat of the Cobbold family, lay in the manor of Wix Bishop; the Cobbolds appear among the copyhold tenants of the manor, and John Cobbold purchased the manor on 26 August 1812 and thereby came into possession of the records of the manor, as represented in this collection. The one record of Wix Ufford manor, which mainly lay in Rushmere and Westerfield, can be explained by the fact that a small part of this manor lay within Wix Bishop and is the present day Cavendish Street. The records of the manors in Waldringfield, Foxwell and Battisford came into the possession of the lord of Wix Bishop when Sir Samuel Barnardiston held the lordship of all these manors. Holy Wells became the centre of a literary circle in the early 19th century through the work of Mrs. Elizabeth Cobbold 1767-1824. Born Elizabeth Knipe she married William Clarke of Ipswich in 1790, and John Cobbold in 1792. She published some poems in 1787, and a novel called 'The Sword' in 1791; her collected poems were published in 1825. She corresponded with a number of people - the most notable in this collection being the M.P. Capel Lofft. She encouraged literary talent and was a patroness of the arts in Ipswich. Her son was the Rev. Richard Cobbold, the author of 'Margaret Catchpole'.
