At the time of the Testa de Neville (about 1280) the manor of Compton was owned by Odo de Compton and at the same time three tenants held Compton under him. These were the Abbott of Quaar who held one virgate in free alms with service, now Compton Grange, Adam de Compton, his son and heir who held a tenement, and William White who held one virgate by the service of a pair of spurs. William White's small estate was eventually inherited about 1428 by Reginald Oglander of Nunwell, after the death of his Kinsman, Thomas Hayward of Writleston, alias Hill Farm, Brading (see Section 'E'), and exchanged by George Oglander with Michael Dennis in 1557 for the manor of Hardingshute (see Section 'B', No. 50)
