Description

Comprises sketches & complete works in MS by John Ogdon, almost entirely unpublished. Virtually every item has additional notes on covers eg. telephone numbers, memoranda, shopping lists, appointments, suggested programmes. Also includes some writings, copies of works by modern British composers, and administrative materials.

Arrangement

Order created (by Skye Atman?) preserved - basis of this order is unknown. Numbering allocated by Skye Atman when compiling an inventory of works prior to their (abortive) sale through Christie's/Sotheby's in 1991. The following 14 items listed in the inventory were not found during cataloguing at the RNCM in April 2003 - it is probable that they were not received at the College when the MSS were purchased in 1991 (although there is nothing in the patchy records to indicate that they had been removed, or that the purchase from Brenda Lucas Ogdon by the RNCM did not include all the items listed in the inventory). JO/010 - Sonatina for piano (published) JO/015 - Sabre Dance MS JO/021.10 and .11 - Song and Lullaby; Song and Lullaby MS (Mozart transcriptions) JO/024 - Cello Sonata - MS JO/025 - Sonata for unaccompanied violin MS JO/042.7 and .8a and .8c - Sonata no.17; 25 short preludes for Ronald & Marjorie; 25 short preludes for John Paul Getty MSS. [JO/042.8c possibly alternate numbering for the 25 preludes dedicated to JP Getty found in JO/012 and JO/012.3]. JO/048.3 Sonatina [for piano] unfinished MS JO/049.1-2 - Prelude (quasi Variazioni) and march. MS JO/059.2 - Study no.8 MS JO/060 - Three pieces for violin and piano One item is listed in the Atman inventory of 1991 as missing (ie not received at the RNCM): JO/011 - Dance Suite for piano MS

Selection and destruction information

On preservation grounds, file covers have been discarded where they bear nothing more than the titles of their contents. Those with annotations, or which are large enough to contain oversize works have been retained.
