Cheltenham Council of Churches was an organisation set up to encourage unity and ecumenical activity. It was an interdenominational organisation established to build closer relationships between churches in the city and to foster Christian unity. The council consisted of representatives from local churches. Its first council meeting was on 10 December 1951 and the first meeting of the executive committee was on 11 February 1952. It began "centre of unity" services in 1976, which took place on Friday lunch-times in the John Wesley room at the Parish Church.
Cheltenham Council of Churches worked in association with the British Council of Churches, which was a fellowship of churches in Britain inaugurated in 1942. In 1990 the British Council of Churches was replaced by the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland with four new national bodies.
